How to Use Session Breaks

This article explains how to use Freedom's Session Breaks feature.

Written by Claire Nielsen

Session Breaks let you temporarily lift your block for 5 minutes without ending your session or using an end session credit. When the timer runs out, blocking resumes automatically.

How to take a break

  1. Open the Freedom app on iOS or Android and tap your running session on the Today screen.

  2. Under the Session Details, tap Take a 5-min break.

  3. Your block lifts immediately and a countdown begins.

  4. When time's up, your session resumes on its own.

If you have notifications enabled, you'll get a notification when it's over: "Break's over. Back to your session."

You can still end your session at any point during a break, assuming Locked Mode is disabled or you have an End Session credit available.

How many breaks can I take?

Locked Mode disabled

Unlimited. When Locked Mode is disabled, you can take another break as soon as one expires.

Locked Mode enabled

1 break per session per calendar day, resetting at 4 AM local time. Breaks in Locked Mode are off by default β€” you can enable them in Settings > Blocking Settings > Allow breaks in Locked Mode.

A few things to know

Breaks are device-local. A break only lifts blocking on the device you start it from. Your other devices keep blocking normally.

You can't edit your session during a break. Blocklists, schedule, and other settings stay read-only while a break is active. To make changes, you'll need to end the session.

Breaks work on mobile only (iOS and Android) for now. Desktop apps and extensions continue blocking even if you start a break from your phone.

Session Breaks are free for everyone β€” no premium plan required.

FAQ

Does taking a break use a weekly end session credit?

No. Breaks are completely separate from end session credits.

Can I end a break early?

No, blocking resumes automatically when the 5 minutes are up.

What if I close the app mid-break?

The timer keeps running based on your device clock. When you reopen Freedom, blocking will have resumed if break time expired.
