Overview
Apple’s iOS operating system can automatically put unused apps to sleep. If you haven’t opened Freedom in a while, this could prevent scheduled sessions from running on time.
Follow the steps below to keep Freedom active and ensure your sessions function as expected.
Don't swipe up to close the Freedom app
Avoid swiping up to close Freedom from the App Switcher. Force-quitting Freedom may interrupt your session syncing.
If you accidentally force-quit the app, reopen it to reactivate the session.
Keeping Freedom running in the background helps maintain accurate session timing.
Open the Freedom app on your device
If your session does not start or stop as scheduled:
Open the Freedom app on your iOS device.
This will immediately resolve most session timing issues.
Enable Notifications
Notifications help keep you informed when sessions begin, end, or encounter an issue.
How to Enable Notifications:
Open the Freedom app and go to the Settings tab.
Turn on notifications for:
Session Start
Session End
When prompted by iOS, allow Freedom to send notifications.
ℹ️ If you see a notification saying "Freedom is not active on your device. Tap here to start your session," simply tap the notification to wake Freedom.
Disable Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode disables Background App Refresh, which Freedom depends on to start and end sessions.
How to Disable Low Power Mode:
Open iOS Settings.
Go to Battery.
Make sure Low Power Mode is turned off.
You'll see a yellow battery icon in the top-right corner of your screen when Low Power Mode is on.
After turning it off, open the Freedom app to ensure it's active.
Ensure Background App Refresh is enabled for Freedom
Freedom must be allowed to run in the background to receive session updates.
How to Enable Background App Refresh:
Go to iOS Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
At the top, make sure Background App Refresh is turned on.
Scroll down and ensure Freedom is toggled on.
ℹ️ If Background App Refresh appears to be toggled on for Freedom but you are still getting the alert that it's not enabled:
Open your iOS Settings and go to General > Background App Refresh.
At the top of the screen, tap 'Background App Refresh' and make sure 'Wifi & Cellular Data' is selected. That should fix the issue.
Ensure you are logged into Freedom
Sessions will not start unless you are logged into the Freedom app using your correct account credentials.
Use the same email and password you used when signing up.
If you need to reset your password, you can do that here.
Ensure your device has an Internet connection
Freedom requires an Internet connection (WiFi or Data) to receive instructions to start or stop your session.
Open Freedom if you have restarted your device
If you restart your iPhone or iPad:
Open the Freedom app manually after the device restarts.
This ensures that Freedom resumes normal session behavior.
