To get started using Freedom on your Android device, follow the steps below to download the app, enable the required permissions, and optimize settings for best performance.
Download Freedom
Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
Log in using your Freedom account credentials.
Once logged in, your Android device will automatically be added to your account.
Enable Permissions
Freedom uses accessibility permissions to block apps and websites. These permissions must be enabled for the app to work effectively.
How to Enable Accessibility Permissions
Open the Freedom app.
Go to the Today tab. If permissions aren't already enabled, you’ll be prompted to do so.
Alternatively, go to the Settings tab and locate the Permissions section.
Make sure Block applications and websites is marked as Enabled.
If not enabled:
Tap Enable.
You’ll be taken to your Android settings.
Toggle permissions on for Freedom.
ℹ️ Some devices treat accessibility permissions as restricted. If this happens:
Go to your device’s Settings.
Navigate to Apps > Freedom.
Select the option to allow restricted settings.
Set Up Do Not Disturb Mode (Optional)
You can allow Freedom to automatically turn on Do Not Disturb (DND) mode during active sessions.
How to Enable DND Permissions
In the Freedom app, go to Settings > Permissions.
Tap Enable next to Do Not Disturb.
You’ll be taken to your Android settings.
Tap Freedom and toggle on Allow Do Not Disturb.
Customize Your DND Level
You can choose the level of DND for your sessions:
Total silence
Alarms only
Priority only
To adjust this setting, go to your Android Do Not Disturb settings.
Adjust Battery Settings for Best Performance
If your phone enforces strict battery-saving settings, these may interfere with Freedom’s functionality.
What to Do
Check if Battery Optimization is enabled for Freedom.
If it is, set Freedom as not optimized to prevent permissions from being revoked.
📘 For device-specific instructions, see: Android Battery Optimization Settings.
Prevent Freedom from Being Uninstalled
To stop Freedom from being uninstalled via the home screen, enable Device Admin permissions.
How to Enable Device Admin
Open the Freedom app.
Go to Settings > Permissions.
Tap Enable next to Device Admin.
Benefits of Device Admin:
Helps prevent uninstalling Freedom from the home screen.
Improves background performance and sync
Tip: enabling Device Admin permissions does not block uninstalling via the device Settings app. To prevent that, you’ll need to block the Settings app using Freedom. For more information on app blocking, see How to block apps on Android.
