Download Freedom
To get started, first download the Freedom app via Google Play. Once you install it, log in with your Freedom account email and password. Your Android device will then be added to your account.
Enable Permissions
In order to block applications and websites on your Android, you will first need to enable permissions for the Freedom app. Freedom uses accessibility permissions on Android to block apps and websites.
You will be prompted to enable these permissions on the Today screen of the app if you haven't already, but you can also set them up via the Settings screen.
To ensure website and app blocking work effectively, make sure Block applications and websites is marked as enabled on the Settings tab of the Freedom app. You will find this under the Permissions section of Settings:
If this is not marked as Enabled, tap Enable. You'll be taken to your Android settings, where you can toggle permissions on for Freedom.
Set Up Do Not Disturb Mode
If desired, you can set up Freedom to automatically turn on your device's DND mode during sessions. To do this, first enable the Do Not Disturb mode permission in your Freedom app settings:
You will be taken to your Android settings. Tap Freedom and toggle on Allow Do Not Disturb:
You can also choose which level of DND you would like to use during your sessions. There are options for total silence, alarms only, or priority only. You can customize this through your Android device settings.
Adjust Battery Settings
If your phone defaults to strict battery-saver settings for all apps, you will need to make an exception for Freedom. If your device's battery is set to be optimized for Freedom, this can lead to permissions being revoked.
For information on how to do this according to Android device type, please see Android Battery Optimization Settings.
Prevent Uninstall
You can prevent uninstalling Freedom to circumvent blocks by enabling device admin permissions. To do this, tap Enable next to Device Admin in the permissions section of the Freedom app settings:
The device admin permission also improves Freedom's ability to run and sync in the background.
Tip: enabling Device Admin permissions will only prevent you from uninstalling Freedom via your home screen. To prevent uninstalling through settings, we recommend blocking the settings app. For more information on app blocking, see How to block apps on Android.
