To get started using Freedom on your Android device, follow the steps below to download the app, enable the required permissions, and optimize settings for best performance.
Download and Install Freedom
To install the Freedom app on your Android device:
Open the Google Play Store.
Search for Freedom.
Tap Download and install the app.
Open the app and log in with your Freedom account credentials.
Once logged in, your Android device will automatically be added to your Freedom account.
Enable Required Permissions
Freedom requires accessibility permissions to block apps and websites effectively. If these are not enabled, Freedom will not function as intended.
How to Enable Accessibility Permissions
Open the Freedom app.
Go to the Today tab.
If permissions are not yet enabled, you'll see a prompt.
Alternatively, go to the Settings tab > Permissions section.
Make sure Block applications and websites is set to Enabled.
If not enabled:
Tap Enable
You’ll be redirected to Android Settings > Accessibility
You might need to tap 'Installed Apps'/'Downloaded Apps' to see Freedom
Toggle the permission on for Freedom
ℹ️ Some devices treat accessibility permissions as restricted. If you encounter this issue:
Open your device's Settings.
Go to Apps > Freedom.
Select Allow restricted settings.
Set Up Do Not Disturb Mode (Optional)
Freedom can automatically enable Do Not Disturb (DND) mode during active sessions to minimize distractions.
How to Enable DND Permissions
In the Freedom app, go to Settings > Permissions.
Tap Enable next to Do Not Disturb.
In Android Settings, tap Freedom and toggle Allow Do Not Disturb to On.
Customize Your DND Level
Choose your preferred DND level in your device’s Android settings:
Total silence
Alarms only
Priority only
To change this, go to your Android Do Not Disturb settings and select your preferred level.
Adjust Battery Settings for Best Performance
Aggressive battery optimization can interfere with Freedom’s functionality.
What to Do
Open your device’s Settings.
Go to Battery > Battery Optimization.
Find Freedom in the list.
Set it to Not optimized to avoid interruptions.
📘 For detailed device-specific instructions, see: Android Battery Optimization Settings.
Prevent Freedom from Being Uninstalled
You can help prevent Freedom from being removed from the home screen by enabling Device Admin permissions.
How to Enable Device Admin
Open the Freedom app.
Go to Settings > Permissions.
Tap Enable next to Device Admin.
Benefits of Device Admin:
Prevents uninstallation of Freedom from the home screen
Improves background performance and syncing
Note: Enabling Device Admin does not prevent uninstallation via the Android Settings app. To block Settings, use Freedom's app blocking feature. Learn more about blocking apps on Android here: How to block apps on Android.
