Apps that are not actively being used can sometimes be put to sleep by Apple’s iOS operating system, (a limitation all App Store developers face), but there are steps you can take to ensure this doesn’t affect your Freedom block sessions.

In order for Freedom to start/end blocks on time, it must be active on your device. Below are some tips for keeping the app active.

Open the Freedom app on your device

If your Freedom session has not started or stopped on time, you can solve the problem immediately by opening the Freedom app.

Enable Notifications

Session notifications can help keep you informed about when your sessions start and stop, and if there’s an issue with your block session. Here’s how to enable session notifications:

  1. Open the Freedom app and go to the settings tab

  2. Turn on notifications for Session Start & Session End

  3. When prompted by your device, allow Freedom to send notifications

Once enabled, please pay attention to the following notifications if you happen to see them:

  • Freedom is not active on your device. Tap here to start your session.

This notification lets you know when Freedom is not active. Tap the notification to open and enable Freedom.

  • Freedom requires your attention” “Open app now to end session.”

If for some reason your block session is running past its end time, this notification lets you know. Tap the notification to open Freedom and end your session.

Do not swipe up to close the Freedom app

Opening the App Switcher on your iOS device and swiping up to close an app is a common habit. However, it is advisable that you avoid doing this for Freedom in order to ensure that it’s active on your device. If you encounter session syncing issues after force-quitting, you can resolve them by simply reopening the app.

Ensure Background App Refresh is enabled for Freedom

"Background App Refresh" must be enabled in order for Freedom to stay active in the background. To do this:

  1. Navigate to your iOS Settings → General → Background App Refresh

  2. At the top of the screen, ensure Background App Refresh is switched on

  3. Scroll down, and ensure Background App Refresh for Freedom is on

Ensure Low Power Mode is disabled

When iOS "Low Power Mode" is on, Background App Refresh is turned off and Freedom cannot receive session updates. When it's on, you'll see a yellow battery indicator in the upper right. To turn it off:

  1. Navigate to Settings → Battery

  2. Ensure that Low Power Mode is off

  3. Open the Freedom app after disabling Low Power Mode

Ensure you are logged into Freedom

You must be logged into the Freedom app on your device with the email address and password that you used to sign up for an account in order for sessions to start on time. If you need to reset your password you can do that here.

Ensure your device has an Internet connection

Freedom requires an Internet connection (WiFi or Data) to receive instructions to start or stop your session.

Open Freedom if you have restarted your device

Opening the Freedom app after restarting your iOS device is beneficial and strongly recommended.
