Whenever you try to open a blocked app on your iPhone or iPad, Freedom shows a green block screen. By default, it reads “You are free. Do what matters,” but you can make it your own, either by picking a tone that fits you or by writing a custom message.
Note: Block screen customization is available on iPhone and iPad only. It applies to apps and websites blocked with Screen Time (selected through Add or remove iOS apps on your blocklist). Learn more in How Freedom Blocks Apps and Websites on iOS.
How to choose a tone
Open the Freedom app on your iPhone or iPad.
Go to Settings → Blocking Settings → Block Screen → Customize Messages.
Tap a tone to preview it. The preview at the top of the screen shows how your block screen will look.
When you've found the one you like, go back. Your choice saves automatically.
Available tones:
Freedom Default: our classic message, "You are free. Do what matters."
Tough Love: a firm nudge to get back on track.
Encouraging: a supportive reminder that you've got this.
Reflective: a prompt to pause and think about what you want to focus on.
Expert Reminders: insights from experts on focus and attention.
Fact-Based: quick facts about distraction and productivity.
Custom Message: your own words (see below).
Some tones include several messages, which rotate each time you see the block screen.
How to write your own message
Go to Settings → Blocking Settings → Block Screen → Customize Messages
Tap Custom Message.
Type your message (up to 80 characters) and tap Save.
To change your message later, return to Customize Messages, tap Custom Message, edit the text and save again. To go back to the original message, select Freedom Default.
Tip: Remind yourself why you set up the block, for example "Finish the essay first" or "Call Mom instead of scrolling." A personal reason is often more effective than a generic one.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I see the block screen?
The block screen appears when you open an app or website that Freedom is blocking through Screen Time during an active session.
I don't see the Customize Block Screen option. Why?
Make sure you're on the latest version of Freedom on an iOS device (iPhone or iPad). You can update Freedom from the App Store.
Will my block screen message sync to my other devices?
No. Your tone and custom message are saved on the device where you set them. If you use Freedom on more than one iPhone or iPad, set your message on each one.
Can I customize the block screen on Mac, Windows or Android?
Not yet. On Mac and Windows, blocked websites show Freedom's green block page, and blocked apps are closed or hidden. Android doesn't show a block screen. If you'd like to see this on other platforms, submit a request to our feature request board.
