About the Freedom Browser Extension

When you are running a block session and attempt to visit a website on your blocklist, you will normally see this screen:

However, certain types of URLs and certain browsers do not reliably display this green screen. To fix this issue, we've created the main Freedom browser extension. This extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera!

Freedom Browser Extension Functionality

The main Freedom browser extension serves two important functions.

  • On ChromeOS (Chromebook) and Linux devices, the Freedom Browser Extension acts as a stand-alone blocking app.  It allows you to sign in, sync your blocklists and schedules, and it blocks websites in Chrome on these devices. For more information see Freedom for ChromeOS and Linux

  • On Mac and Windows devices, the Freedom Browser Extension extends the functionality of Freedom in the Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera browsers and ensures that all of your blocked sites display with the Freedom green screen!

The extension allows you to use Freedom's blocks with most browser-based VPN extensions, and also fixes some minor network issues that might be preventing your blocks from functioning.

Installing on Mac or Windows

  1. First, sign up for a Freedom account and download the Freedom Mac or Windows desktop app if you haven't already!

  2. Head over to https://freedom.to/downloads and scroll down to the bottom of the page. You'll find links to install our extensions there.

ℹ️ Please note that on Mac and Windows devices, the Freedom browser extension does not act as a stand-alone blocker. To block websites on Mac and Windows you must have the Freedom Windows or Mac app active on your device.

Installing on ChromeOS or Linux

  1. First, visit the Freedom Chrome Extension page in the Chrome Store and install the Freedom Chrome Extension.

  2. Once the extension is installed, you can either sign in with your existing account, or create a new trial account.  The new device will show up as a "Chrome" or "Linux" device in your Freedom dashboard. For more detailed instructions see Freedom for ChromeOS and Linux
