When you are running a block session and attempt to visit a website on your blocklist, you will normally see this screen:

However, certain types of URLs and certain browsers do not reliably display this green screen. To fix this issue, we've created the main Freedom browser extension. This extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera!

The Freedom Browser Extension

The main Freedom browser extension serves two important functions.

First, on ChromeOS (Chromebook) and Linux devices, the Freedom Browser Extension acts as a stand-alone blocking app.  It allows you to sign in, sync your blocklists and schedules, and it blocks websites in Chrome on these devices.

On Mac and Windows devices, the Freedom Browser Extension extends the functionality of Freedom in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera browsers and ensures that all of your blocked sites display with the Freedom green screen!

The extension allows you to use Freedom's blocks with most browser-based VPN extensions, and also fixes some minor network issues that might be preventing your blocks from functioning.

How to install the browser extension on Mac or Windows

  1. First, sign up for a Freedom account and download the Freedom Mac or Windows desktop app if you haven't already!

  2. Head over to https://freedom.to/downloads and scroll down to the bottom of the page. You'll find links to install our extensions there.

How to install the browser extension on ChromeOS or Linux

  1. First, visit the Freedom Chrome Extension page in the Chrome Store.  Install the Freedom Chrome Extension.

  2. Once the Extension is installed, you can either sign in with your existing account, or create a new trial account.  The new device will show up as a "Chrome" or "Linux" device in your Freedom dashboard.

You can now schedule blocks on your ChromeOS and Linux device just like all your other Freedom devices.  Please note, the Freedom Extension only acts as a Chrome Website Blocker on these devices.

Troubleshooting

Q: What does the Freedom browser extension do?

A: The Freedom browser extension ensures that all of your blocked sites display the calming Freedom green screen and assists with blocking in certain instances.

Freedom blocks distracting websites, apps, or the whole internet across all your devices - the Freedom browser extension provides the green screen on all of your blocked pages.

Q: Why isn’t it working on Mac or Windows?

A: It’s likely that you’re not logged in to the Freedom Mac or Windows desktop app. Open the app on your computer and login with your Freedom account credentials.

Once you’re logged in, simply start a Freedom session on your Mac or Windows computer (start the session from the app itself or from your Freedom dashboard) and the browser extension will do its thing.

Q: What's the difference between this extension and Freedom Lab extensions (Insight, Limit, Pause)?

A: The main Freedom browser extension ensures that all of your blocked pages block correctly and display our signature "green screen", and also fixes some minor issues that might cause issues with blocks not working.

Freedom Lab extensions (Limit, Insight, and Pause) add additional features that our users have requested. Since these are standalone extensions, they do not require the Mac/Windows desktop Freedom app to function.
