Why am I being charged VAT?

Why UK and EU customers now pay VAT on Freedom website purchases, how much it is, and where to see it on your receipt.

Written by John Pjontek

Since 21 October 2026, Freedom adds VAT to website purchases for customers in the UK and the European Union. Tax rules require digital services to charge VAT based on where you live.

How much is it?

Your country's standard VAT rate (for example, 20% in the UK or 19% in Germany). Freedom's price doesn't change; VAT is added on top. We use the billing address you enter at checkout to work out your country.

Where do I see it?

Your receipt lists the price, the VAT rate and the VAT amount separately. You're charged in US dollars, and the VAT amount is also shown in your local currency for reference.

To view past receipts, go to freedom.to/settings → Manage Billing → Billing History.

I subscribed through the App Store or Google Play

Nothing changes. Apple and Google set app store prices, and those already include VAT.

Enter your VAT number at checkout and VAT won't be added. You'll account for it under the reverse-charge rules.

Special cases

  • Isle of Man or Northern Ireland: choose United Kingdom and enter your own postcode.

  • Jersey or Guernsey: UK VAT isn't charged.
